The opening game between hosts Angola and Mali ended in a 4-4 draw after an unlikely comeback by Mali, who were losing 4-0 with 11 minutes left till full-time! Angola were leading 2-0 at half-time and doubled their advantage with two second-half penalties. However, the team relaxed and with many home fans having already left the stadium celebrating a win, Mali scored what was thought by many to be a late consolation goal, but three more goals, two deep into injury time ensured the most unlikeliest of draws! So, the first ever match at the 11 November Stadium provided a thrilling start to a Nations Cup that had been overshadowed by Friday’s gun attack on the Togolese team, who have now been withdrawn by their government and flown home.

In the Premier League, Saturday’s games at Hull, Fulham, Burnley and Sunderland are all off, while Liverpool’s game with Tottenham on Sunday has also been hit.

Six Championship games are off, only two matches survive in League One, there are none in League Two while 10 Scottish Cup ties have also been postponed.

Elsewhere in the football news, Patrick Vieira has returned to the Premier League, having signed for Manchester City from Inter Milan. The 33-year-old French midfielder has signed a six-month contract at Eastlands with the option of a further year. Vieira becomes Roberto Mancini’s first signing as City boss. Meanwhile, Liverpool have parted company with Defender Andrea Dossena, who signed a four-year contract with Napoli.

Bolton have appointed Owen Coyle as their new manager on a two-and-a-half year deal after agreeing compensation with Burnley. The former Wanderers striker, who played for Bolton between 1993 and 1995, had been on the verge of succeeding Gary Megson all week. Saturday’s game at Sunderland is off, so his first match in charge will be against Arsenal on Sunday 17 January. Coyle said he wants to “bring back the good times” to Bolton.
